India’s Omicron tally jumps to 21

  • On a day when the Capital reported its first Omicron case, nine tested positive for the variant in Rajasthan and seven more in Maharashtra.
  • The details: Delhi’s health minister Satyendar Jain on Sunday informed that a man of Indian origin, who had arrived from Tanzania on December 2, had tested positive for the coronavirus variant. (He previously stayed in Johannesburg, South Africa, for a week.)
  • Dr Suresh Kumar, MD, LNJP Hospital, added that the patient “experienced sore throat, weakness & body ache”. “His contact tracing is being done. He had taken both doses of Covid-19 vaccine due to which he had mild symptoms.”
  • In Pune, Maharashtra, a 44-year-old woman from Nigeria, who had come to visit her brother on November 24 in Pimpri-Chinchwad, along with her two daughters, was found to be infected with the new variant. Her 45-year-old brother and his two-and-a-half-year-old and seven-year-old daughters were also infected with Omicron.
  • Per an official release, the Nigerian woman has very mild symptoms and the other five have no symptoms at all. While three of those infected are aged below 18, the other three have been fully vaccinated. They are currently being treated at a hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad.
  • Additionally, a 47-year-old man also tested positive for the variant in Pune. Fully vaccinated with Covishield, he had visited Finland last month and got tested recently after he had a mild fever. He is currently stable with no symptoms.
  • Four among the nine infected by the Omicron variant in Jaipur, Rajasthan were returnees from South Africa. They were admitted to the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences — a dedicated Covid-19 facility. Officials said that the other five who were infected are being admitted.
  • State health secretary Vaibhav Galaria said that contact tracing is on and samples had been collected from 34 people who came in contact with them; 25 of them were negative.
  • That makes it: 21 Omicron cases till now — nine in Rajasthan, eight in Maharashtra, two in Karnataka, and one each in Gujarat and Delhi.
