- WhatsApp is working on a new disappearing messages feature.
- This feature would allow users to set a self-destruct time limit for messages.
- So far this feature is in works for its Android platform only.
WhatsApp is constantly working to add new and interesting features on to its platform. We already know it is working on a dark mode for its iOS based platform that would be compatible with iOS 13’s dark theme. We also know that is working on developing a bunch of other features such as the Hide Muted Status updates feature that would completely hide the muted statues as opposed to showing them in grey under a separate sub-section in the Status tab, and Alignment Indicator, which would essentially help users align stickers, emojis etc on photos, videos and GIFs appropriately. But the most interesting feature that has created ripples among the WhatsApp users is the disappearing messages feature.
For those of you who aren’t sure what this feature would do, here is a brief. WhatsApp’s disappearing messages feature would allow users to set a time limit after which the message that they have chosen would expire leaving no trace of its existence. This feature, from what we know so far, is similar to social messaging app Telegram’s Secret Chat feature wherein all the sent messages come with a self-destruct timer. Once the recepient has read the message the timer will begin and the message will get deleted from the sender and the receiver’s inbox when the timer goes off or when the time limit that is set by the sender expires.
WABetaInfo, the blog site that tracks developments in WhatsApp, noted that WhatsApp has started rolling out this update through the Google Play Beta Program version 2.19.275, which means that the feature is in works for the company’s Android based app only. However, if you are running the latest beta version of WhatsApp’s Android based app and you are unable to use the disappearing messages feature, don’t worry as the feature is in the alpha stage of development, which means that it will take some time for the Facebook-owned social messaging app to develop this feature and roll it out to its beta testers.
Meanwhile, take a look at all the details we have about this feature so far:
— As of now, this feature is available only in the group chats. Only group admins will be able to use the toggle button to control this feature. However, this might change before the feature is rolled out to all users.
